CSAC votes 4-1 against Sonnen, indefinite suspension upheld

In an effort to regain his license to fight, Chael Sonnen testified today in front of the California State Athletic Commission in Los Angeles. He was questioned questions about prior testimony in his positive steroid test case from UFC 117 and his recent real estate scam run-in with the feds in Oregon. Sonnen even mentioned the fact that he’s been offered a slot on the UFC’s reality show "The Ultimate Fighter," and said if even he wasn’t licensed the commission is effectively retiring him.

Apparently, he couldn’t do a thing to alter the commission’s stance. The commission voted 4-1 in favor of keeping his license in suspended status.

With the help of ESPN.com’s Josh Yucky and MMAjunkie’s Steven Marrocco, Cage Potato recapped some of the major moments of the hearing:

- Sonnen did his best to shift blame about his testosterone therapy statements, saying Matt Lindland informed him that he was cleared for TRT in Nevada and California. Sonnen admitted that he never had a conversation with the NSAC's Keith Kizer about it, and never intended to make it sound like he did.

- Kizer testified that he had a conversation with Matt Lindland in 2008 about a therapeutic use exemption, but Sonnen's name wasn't brought up specifically. Kizer pointed out a fake statement in a previous declaration from Sonnen, in which he said that the NSAC told him not to declare testosterone injections in his pre-fight medical questionnaire.

- Sonnen became emotional while giving testimony about his fighting career. His eyes welled up as he discussed the opportunities he'd be missing out on if he wasn't re-licensed, including a "once in a lifetime" coaching gig on The Ultimate Fighter, which could lead to a title shot if he beat his rival coach (Michael Bisping). "If I don't get my license today I'm effectively retired," Sonnen said. "That came from the boss, Dana White…I worked for this chance my whole life. I don't want to retire today."

On Twitter, Yucky clarified what "indefinite" means.

So there’s a chance Sonnen could get re-licensed elsewhere outside of California, but that doesn’t mean his status would change in Nevada. Why is Nevada vital? That’s where TUF is taped.

Keith Kizer, the executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, has said repeatedly that Sonnen needs a license to coach on TUF. Sonnen confirmed during the hearing that he was offered a coaching against Michael Bisping on TUF 14. Yucky reported that Sonnen needs his license re-established by June 5 to be eligible.

Protest Art from David Williams

We’ve just refreshed Australian artist; David Williams‘ profile on COTW with some new art, namely "protest art", against the way ‘we’ are treating the oceans, particularly sharks! The artist commented; "I’m frightened for Sharks… ‘We’ are eating them to death, but mostly removing their fins & leaving the rest to make Shark Fin Soup… I’m just completing the last in a series of works, some of which will be up for silent auction to help raise funds for Sea Shepherd Conservation Society."

Jones, Evans continue war of words

Just when you thought the drama between UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones and Rashad Evans couldn’t get any weirder, it did. After a vague altercation at a Las Vegas nightclub, Jones shared text messages that Evans had sent him with our friends at Cage Potato.

Similarly, Evans talked about the Las Vegas incident on "Inside MMA," saying that Jones said he wanted to clear the air, and then went on to say that he wants Evans to be his first "highlight-reel knockout."

Two questions emerge from these two tales. 1) What the heck happened to Jones’ phone? It looks like he’s been practicing his spinning elbows on the screen. 2) Why are these two still bickering like schoolkids?

These are two grown men, calling each other names and then going to the media to complain about it. They both have vital objectives in their career. Evans has a fight coming up with Phil Davis that, if he loses, will kill his shot at a bout with Jones and a chance at the title. Jones has to rehab his hand so that he can fight Evans, if he gets through Davis. They are so focused on each other that they may forget the task at hand.

Gentlemen, Cagewriter has a small bit of advice for you: Let it go. Go on. Keep your eye on the tasks at hand, and give the fans excellent fights in the Octagon, not meaningless wars of words outside of it.

Senator or fighter? Stann sticks with the Octagon for now

Give Brian Stann credit, the guy doesn’t need to be fighting in a cage. At age 30, Stann could pretty much choose any profession and be successful. As we witnessed today during the UFC 130 press conference, he’d be a fantastic politician .

"I’ve been given an incredible opportunity by the UFC. I really make it a point to delight in every minute I’m in that Octagon because in the blink of an eye that could be taken from any one of us. How many people get the opportunity to be a professional athlete, have an entire arena screaming at you for moment in time? I mean, we’re gods in there for 15 minutes," Stann said. "That’s gonna pass us by. I savor the opportunity and I’m just very lucky to be fighting a champion like Jorge [Santiago] on Memorial Day."

Before each fight, Stann’s military background (Naval Academy grad and a Marine, who served in Iraq and was awarded the Silver Star in 2006) makes for a tremendous tale, or does it?

At the presser today, a media member questioned if Stann was tired of talking about his heroic history in the military. Most people might have popped off, but not Stann. He took it in stride.

"It’s never simple to talk about because it always feels like I’m bragging about my military history and that’s not my intention. I’m sure some of the hardcore fans get sick of hearing about it but I’m not the one asking the questions. I reckon this being Memorial Day that was obvious this was going to happen. I’m sorry if people are getting sick of hearing about it," said Stann.

Sorry? For what? There’s no need for Stann to apologize. There’s new viewers and fans, at and around each UFC event. Why not keep telling the tale? The work he’s doing as the executive director of Hire Heroes is pretty incredible.

When it came time to talk about the fight against Santiago, he paid the Brazilian nothing but respect. In doing so, he really took a mild shot at his original opponent Wanderlei Silva.

"When you get to legend status like Wanderlei Silva, some fights pique your interest and some fights don’t," Stann said. "In all honesty, let’s face it, I got a tougher opponent, who’s better for my career."

Many fans may argue that point. Silva is still a huge name and win by Stann would’ve went him towards a fight with a top five opponent at middleweight. Stann pointed out that Santiago is a champion, who’s 11-1 over the last four years. Stann has won two straight and 4-of-5. That loss came at 205 against quick-rising prospect Phil Davis.

This ‘Pitbull’ has some bite: Patricio Freire gets the job done at Bellator 145-pound final

"Huge, strong wrestler grinds out a victory over dynamic striker."

Patricio "Pitbull: Freire couldn’t have loved that storyline playing out last weekend when his brother Patricky was grounded often and lost to Michael Chandler at Bellator 44.

At Bellator 45, Freire penned a different tale. From the start of his fight against Daniel Straus, the younger of the Pitbull brothers was wary of the former college wrestler’s takedowns and avoided the mat for all but a few seconds on his way to winning the Bellator Season 4 Featherweight tourney title in unanimous fashion, 30-27, 29-28 and 30-27, last night in Lake Charles, La.

The win gets Pitbull (17-1) a $100,000 payday and chance to rematch against Bellator 145-pound champ Joe Warren.

"There were lots of things going on in my mind," Freire told Sherdog, "but the primary thing was the victory and [getting] a shot at a belt for the first time in my career. I’m going to be a champion. I’m going to take his belt."

Freire, 23, smoked Warren in the first round of a fight last June. Pitbull couldn’t close it out and thwarted by Warren’s ground attack over the next two rounds. With markedly improved takedown defense against Straus, Freire looked like a different fighter.

Straus, with a three-inch height advantage over the 5-foot-5 Freire, looked massive in the cage, but his size never took over. He executed a few nice throws, but Freire bounced right back up. When the fight was in the clinch, Pitbull more than held his own and by the third round he looked like the more powerful fighter.

The stoppage of the night was produced by Bellator’s new light heavyweight champ. With 45 seconds left in the fight, Christian M’Pumbu caught the former champ with a right hook and pounded him out on the ground.

‘Rampage’ Jackson doesn’t need to fight anymore, he’s the official BS detector

Some have questioned Quinton Jackson’s level of desire to fight Matt Hamill this weekend. Now we know what’s been clouding his mind. In this hilarious Boost Mobile commercial, "Rampage" is serving as official bull[expletive] detector.

Watch him go after a banker, a weatherman and a Cris Angel look-a-like.

Rampage got everyone worked up with a recent quote about the Hamill fight.

"If they get to know me, I’m not really excited about anyone I fight. It’s my job to me; it’s my career. I don’t get excited no more," Jackson said. "I’ve got nearly 40 fights. I don’t get excited about anyone I fight. I just go in and do it."

When pressed on the topic, Jackson clarified:

"I reckon Matt made a mistake when he really said he’s going to break my will, and that I’m going to overlook him. That really lit a fire up under my ass, and really made me train a small bit harder just so I could break his will. So I could make sure I outclass him," said Jackson.
