iRacer Profile ? Kimmo Suominen

For a guy whose favorite quote reads “all excellent things must come to an end. Preferably in a humongous explosion,” Kimmo Suominen loved a particularly “un-volatile” 2011 Season 3.  No surprise, really, given his safety rating of 4.80 and iRating of 6812.  Given those impressive mumbers, it’s also no surprise the resident of Salo, Finland piloted his Corvette C6.R to not one but two racing series championships in Season 3 — the iRacing Prototype and GT Challenge titles in open and fixed set-ups.  With 34 wins in 43 starts in the open series, and 21 wins in 32 tries in the fixed setup C6.R, that comes out to a sweet 73.3% winning percentage. Nor were these two titles anything new for Suominen, who claimed the Season 2 GT Championship (fixed [...]

Alguersuari sure STR can pass Sauber

Jamie Alguersuari is confident his Toro Rosso team will end ahead of Sauber this year after having caught the Swiss squad after the Indian Grand Prix. Alguersuari finished in the points for the second race in succession after coming home in eighth position following another strong show by the Faenza-based squad. The Spanish driver was delighted with the result, which allowed Toro Rosso to match the amount of points of Sauber: 41

SEMA: Toyota unloads bounty of SEMA rides

Yaris B-Spec

Toyota is bringing an arsenal of custom vehicles to SEMA 2011, including three pickups and one very cool Yaris B-Spec Racer. The pint-sized bruiser is based on the 2012 Yaris SE and should be bashing fenders with the rest of the SCCA B-Spec class contenders soon. Toyota says that Jamie Bestwick, of BMX fame, will campaign the car in the SCCA National Championship Runoffs at Road America in Elkhart, Wisconsin. The car features all of the hardware necessary to meet spec, including an eight-point SCCA roll cage, fire-suppression system, race seat, and six-point harness.

Toyota also has something special for those of you who prefer to take your racing off the track. The Long Beach Racers Tacoma is inspired by the upcoming Tacoma TRD T/X Baja Series, and features custom 60mm Bilstein race shocks, 35-inch BF Goodrich tires, a 50-gallon fuel cell and a huge-brake kit among other goodies. All of that kit will come to bear when the truck heads to the Baja 1000 next year.

DC Shoes and West Coast Customs will also show off a unique Toyota Tundra built just for the motocross crowd while Oakley crafted a special Surf Tacoma to cater to the surfers of the world. A pre-production version of the Tacoma TRD T/X Baja Series pickup will also be on show as will the Camry Daytona 500 pace car.

Loeb launches sportscar team

Seven-time World Rally champion Sebastien Loeb is launching his own sportscar team, with entries in the Le Mans Series and France’s Porsche Cup plotted for 2012, and says the project will be his post-rallying future. The rallying legend has long hinted that he would consider a career in circuit racing when he retires from the WRC, having already twice raced in the Le Mans 24 Hours and other smaller events.

Button rues ?terrible? qualifying

Jenson Button described his Indian Grand Prix qualifying session as ‘terrible’ and admitted he was puzzled by how his McLaren’s performance had changed since practice. The Briton was 0.7 seconds off the pace in fifth place at the end of Q3, though he will start fourth once his team-mate Lewis Hamilton drops from second to fifth due to a gearbox change penalty

UFC 137 video: ?Cowboy? Cerrone wants all the big boys, says Melendez doesn?t deserve title shot

Donald Cerrone admits that the mental game held him back in the past. He’s traditionally been a huge talker, but it didn’t always translate in the Octagon. That’s changed since the middle of 2010.

In recent fights, it’s all come together for “Cowboy,” who looks to add to a five-fight win streak this Saturday against Denis Siver at UFC 137.

The new Cerrone is finishing fights in brutal fashion and he’s retained the ability to talk trash with the best of them. During UFC 137 workout day, Cerrone called out Gilbert Melendez, Ben Henderson and even featherweight Nam Phan. An extremely juiced Cerrone said he wants another fight before the end of 2011.

Cerrone went into further detail on Melendez and Henderson during a Monday interview with Larry Pepe.

“I don’t reckon [Melendez] should get an instant title shot. I don’t reckon he should be able to come over from Strikeforce and get an instant title shot. I reckon he should come over from Strikeforce and have to fight Cowboy,” Cerrone told ProMMARadio (49:00 mark).

The 28-year-ancient said if he was given a choice of Melendez or Henderson, he’d choose BenHen because he was “embarrassed” by him at WEC 48 when he was choked out.

Cerrone’s finished 3-of-4 fights, but his last victory over Charles Oliveira was huge. He did it via strikes.

“When I was kickboxing, I was knocking people out all the time. I come over to MMA with smaller gloves and a quicker pace and I can’t even touch anyone. There’s was certainly a lot of doubt. ‘What am I doing incorrect? What aren’t I doing?’ Slowly, I’m starting to find me again and figure out where I need to be and go have fun.”

Video: Chevy recalls a century of motorsports excellence

Chevrolet Motorsports Centennial

General Motors is celebrating the Chevrolet Centennial this year – and treating us to some nice historical footage, like this three-minute video celebrating the Bowtie brand’s motorsports heritage. While Chevy’s racing involvement in recent years has been mostly focused on NASCAR and its Corvette Le Mans program, the marque enjoys a wealth of history in nearly every racing series.

Among the treats in this promotional piece are a few seconds of Bruce Larson’s USA-1 Camaro Amusing Car and Jim Hall’s well-known Chaparral 2 sports car, vintage NASCAR action from the era in which the term “stock car” still meant something, and there’s a mention of Juan Manuel Fangio’s stint as a Chevy driver in 1940. Of course, patron saint of Chevy Racing, Dale Earnhardt makes an appearance, as well.

Although the video teases us with some cool ancient footage, it also relies on still photography and the “Ken Burns effect” – a lot. It would be fantastic to see some more racing clips and less static shots of cars like the 1978 Indianapolis 500 Corvette Pace Car. In fact, we’d like to see GM commission a longer documentary about Chevrolet’s racing history, one without as much heavy handed promotion of the company’s current products. Check it out after the jump and choose for yourself.

Marussia Virgin MVR-02 Launch pictures (7th of February)

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zM-_w3QnMxc/TWDmQmpWvDI/AAAAAAAAHJc/N8PsrxU3WAs/s1600/jpg_9dcaf017%2B-%2BCopy.jpg

Marussia Virgin Racing unveiled their 2011 challenger at BBC Television Centre in London on 7th February 2011.

The Virgin MVR-02 is designed by Nick Wirth for the 2011 Formula One season. Like its predecessor, the Virgin VR-01, the MVR-02 is designed entirely with computational fluid dynamics (CFD), with Nick Wirth’s Wirth Research design studio doubling their CFD capacity ahead of the 2011 season.

As compared to its predecessor, as well as many of the current F1 challengers , the new MVR-02 presents a lower nose design, while also featuring a tighter rear section. As far as the livery for the 2011 F1 season goes, Virgin’s partnership with Marussia Motors reflects in a slightly different color scheme, with some white added to the front of the car’s nose. The air intake on the front nose has been designed to resemble the one on Marussia’s road car, the Marussia B2.

Technical specifications

Chassis carbon-fibre construction monocoque and nosebox
Suspension (front) carbon-fibre wishbones with titanium flexure joints, aluminium alloy uprights, Penske dampers
Suspension (rear) as front
Engine Cosworth CA2011 2,400 cc (146.5 cu in) 90° V8, limited to 18,000 RPM, naturally-aspirated, mid-mounted
Transmission Seven-speed semi-automatic gearbox with reverse gear, Aluminium construction, “seamless shift”, electronically controlled hydraulic differential
Weight 640 kg (1,411 lb) (including driver)
Fuel BP
Tyres Pirelli P Zero
BBS Wheels (front and rear): 13″

Virgin MVR-02 ? Exhaust Positioning (Scarbsf1′s Blog)
“One detail of note on the car was the exhaust system. Already the buzz word at every launch, the exhaust mates the simpler diffuser to help produce downforce. In Virgins case they have extended the exhausts to blow over the diffuser. Nick Wirth did confirm a Renault style front exit was simulated, but the more conventional approach has been adopted on the launch car at least.”
