I reckon it’s sad that we even have to question that question. Of course everything on Sci-Fi Channel (I refuse to use the new corporate term) is fiction (and yes, that includes the Wrestling). Whether there is any science in any of it…

It is a show about REAL ghost hunters. Now whether or not there are really ghosts is up to you. Personally, I believe there may be supernatural presences but I don’t believe that people can really “ghost hunt”. I still watch the show though and I’d like to reckon that what they hear and see is right but it’s just too hard to believe. I just find it kinda sad though that people pay money to these so-called “ghost hunters”.
JUST DELIGHT IN THE SHOW THOUGH AND DON’T PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR BROTHER! He is right that science fiction does mean it’s fiction but the part of the show about the ghost hunters is REAL it’s just the part when they hear whispering and see thing moving and stuff that is fake.
Just watch it for fun like I do though!

my opinion is that it is fake. Why else would it only be filmed at night( so you can’t see the people banging pots and pans) and why is nothing ever caught on tape? They say ” oh my God, something just ran right past us!”, but the camera was conveniently looking elsewhere. They’re just trying to get excellent ratings, i mean have you seen the new commercials of them trying to find Hitlers’ ghost? Ridiculous!

They should name it the Dinosaur-Monster channel and be done with it.

SyFy is the lamest thing I’ve ever seen. Illiterate nonsense. Not cutting edge, not cool, just lame. Looks like a child’s toy, and always reminds me of the city in North Africa called Syufy.

BBC America has MUCH, much better sci-fi.

“The name Sci Fi has been associated with geeks and dysfunctional, antisocial boys in their basements with video games and stuff like that, as opposed to the general public and the female audience in particular,” said TV historian Tim Brooks, who helped launch Sci Fi Channel when he worked at USA Network.

Mr. Brooks said that when people who say they don’t like science fiction delight in a film like “Star Wars,” they don’t reckon it’s science fiction; they thinThe network worked with the branding consultancy Landor Associates and went through about 300 possibilities before selecting Syfy.

“When we tested this new name, the thing that we got back from our 18-to-34 techno-savvy crowd, which is quite a lot of our audience, is really this is how you’d text it,” Mr. Howe said. “It made us feel much cooler, much more cutting-edge, much more hip, which was kind of bang-on what we wanted to achieve communication-wise.”
k it’s a excellent movie.

“We spent a lot of time in the ’90s trying to distance the network from science fiction, which is largely why it’s called Sci Fi,” Mr. Brooks said. “It’s somewhat cooler and better than the name ‘Science Fiction.’ But even the name Sci Fi is limiting.”

Sean B is right. “Alice” was a two-part movie; they may show it again though.

It is like many other channels, it has some excellent programming and some terrible programming…

On the whole, i like it.

They named it SyFy because they could not copyright ‘SciFi’

Although I really don’t care either way, but there is more than one reason for it.

1) what was stated earlier … so that they can trademark it.
2) it’s only 4 letters, so it fits better on Tivo and satellite/cable listings.
3) it’s free advertising for the network on news and blogs like this, so the one or two people who haven’t heard of it can get an interest.
4) it’s simpler to search SyFy only stuff on Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.
5) they can now place on a bunch of crap that has nothing to do with sci-fi or Sci-Fi … (i.e. a reality show about a couple that wants to adopt a lizard baby as their own child.)

Okay, SyFy … place new Reaper and Pushing Daisies episodes on it and I don’t care what you call it, I’ll tune in.

They aren’t just changing their name either. You can expect to see less “shoot ‘em up” and “space monster” shows and see more that have more personable characters who have complicated interpersonal relationships.

They really dream of attracting a significant female audience and the typical giant worm movies just don’t cut it with them. They certainly want to stop the general public from associating “sci-fi” with “nerd TV”.

You’ve probably noticed with the newer series like Eureka and Warehouse 13 that things are already moving in that direction.

Whether or not the ladies will will watch in significant numbers is still very questionable in my opinion. Is there a vast amount of sci-fi that would appeal to both male and female viewers? I honestly don’t know.
